Protecting Your Workforce. Supporting Safer Workplaces.

AMCA Medicare Occupational Health Department provides professional occupational health services to businesses, organisations and employees.

Our occupational health services are led by Dr. A.R. Dosani and focus on assessing employee fitness, identifying occupational health risks and supporting employers in maintaining a healthier and safer workforce.

South African occupational-health legislation provides for risk-based medical surveillance, which can include clinical examinations, biological monitoring and medical testing depending on workplace exposures.

Our Occupational Health Services

Pre-Employment Medicals

Medical assessments prior to employment or placement into a specific position to determine an employee’s medical suitability for the anticipated duties and workplace exposures.

Periodic Medical Surveillance

Ongoing health assessments for employees whose work or occupational exposure requires medical surveillance. Surveillance should be based on the workplace risk assessment and relevant occupational exposure.

Fitness-for-Work Assessments

Assessment of an employee’s health in relation to the physical, medical and occupational requirements of their specific position.

Return-to-Work Assessments

Medical evaluation following significant illness, injury or absence to determine whether an employee can safely return to their duties and whether temporary restrictions or accommodations may be required.

Exit Medicals

Occupational medical assessments when an employee leaves employment or exits a particular occupational exposure.

Occupational Medical Surveillance

Structured medical surveillance can be provided according to workplace hazards and risk assessments, including exposure to noise, respiratory hazards, chemicals, biological agents, ergonomic risks and other occupational hazards where applicable.

Certification

Fitness-for-Work Certification

Following an occupational medical assessment, an employee may be classified according to the findings of the assessment and requirements of the specific position.

Possible outcomes may include:

  • Fit for work
  • Fit with restrictions
  • Temporarily unfit
  • Further investigation required
  • Further specialist assessment required

Certification is issued only after the appropriate medical assessment. Outcomes depend on clinical findings and the requirements of the specific role.

    Appropriate assessment is selected

The occupational health examination is tailored to the employee’s role and identified workplace risks.

  3. 3

    Medical assessment is completed

The employee undergoes the required clinical examination and screening investigations.

  4. 4

    Occupational medical review

The occupational health practitioner reviews the clinical findings and investigations.

  5. 5

    Fitness certification

Appropriate occupational medical documentation or fitness certification is issued where clinically appropriate.

Important information

Information Employers Should Provide

Employers sending employees for occupational medical assessments should ideally provide:

  • Employee name and identification details
  • Job title
  • Job description
  • Workplace risk assessment where available
  • Occupational exposures
  • Specific physical requirements of the position
  • Previous occupational medical records where relevant
  • Required medical surveillance standards or company medical forms

This allows the occupational health assessment to be specific to the employee’s actual workplace duties.
